The highlights of this week was going to a part of the world’s longest yard sale & then goettafest in Newport KY.
I started an intense two week “master class” taught by shane wolf. I’m improving and learning immensly. My studio went through a chair critique with full scale prototypes (My work). Also had a critique in my design communication class where my group is focusing on a lifestyle brand with watches, shoes, & glasses.
Thank you Omni Technologies in Indiana for the tour. Specializing in high quality thermoset plastic. The manufacturing place was beautiful in a way.
I’m back in Cincinnati, already started rolling with school. Lots to do, lots to do…. For our materials & processes class we took a trip to Granger Plastics. It was interesting to see the roto-molding process up-close. Thanks Granger Plastics!
I finished my internship at Indeed. Günter is there saying peace and goodbye. I heard there is a German law that prohibits working in windowless offices, well we got lots of windows.
Then it was straight to Berlin to see Rachel and Carlie and visit the DMY. There was a lot of interesting things to see. There was a giant robot arm using crushed refrigerators to make new chairs. My favorite was the lights in the form of a tree. You blow at the base and it lights up!
In addition to taxis, buses, the S-bahhn, & U-bahn, the city of Hamburg also provides a bicycle rental service. I have no need to use it, but without a doubt the city has provided a very distinct-looking bike. Over time, I think the bike will be part of the image Hamburg. Maybe they’ll even start making kitsch like miniature key-chain replicas. Just as how the rental bikes in Barcelona and Paris look distinctive themselves. In my opinion, I don’t care much for the look of the bikes.
Last week was the Harbors birthday. All the ships came in and floated on by.
In the third picture, I couldn’t ignore the look of the station, it’s located on an outer part of Hamburg called Othmarschen. Nothing in particular there, I was just exploring.
Lastly, It was time to pick up some new soap. Since I’ve been on a crusade against parabens & sulfates; in search of simple formulated soaps. I’ve come to find this Beer & Honey shampoo as well as this wicked looking bar of soap.
The flowers are blooming in Hamburg. Went to go visit this beautiful church, St. Michaelis. It was all white on the inside, something strange for catholic churches. No stained glass. Just white and gold. It felt very pure, nice.
Frohe Ostern! (happy easter)
I was lucky enough to spend it with Hannes & Nora in Berlin. I can see Berlin is blossoming into a very beautiful city. The leaves were out, lots of green, & lots of people everywhere. I have never seen such a large park filled so full. There was also lots of trash. As a designer, how could the trash issue be solved?
One of the photos is a glasses shop, the sign is a pair of glasses, very clever, minimal, & to the point.
This past weekend I went to visit some friends in Aarhus, Denmark. It’s a beautiful harbor city. Their school was even more beautiful, it felt like a picturesque workshop. It was a bit messy like my own studio, but the beautiful wood floors and furniture created a warm atmosphere. It was a different kind of messy, it felt more natural. I really envy their studio. Every time my studio gets messy it feels like hazardous to my health (all the chemicals and foam). They had model helicopters to play with during off times. I’m definitely bringing that hobby to my studio.
I have an idea for my senior project and it involves researching drinking culture. We played 3 drinking games: pyramid, maya, & beer pong (danish way). The danish word for beer is beautiful, look it up. It’s probably the most aesthetically beautiful word I’ve seen so far.
